One Day in Liechtenstein

by Krista

Getting to Liechtenstein was no small feat. I started my journey to Liechtenstein in Zurich, Switzerland. From Zurich I had to take one train, and one bus to arrive in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein.

To my delight, I arrived to the city with a full blown street carnival under way. I spent some time meandering among the many carnival stalls before I decided to try my hand at finding the Vaduz castle.

Liechtenstein is home to a royal family and the royal family just so happens to live in a castle on the hill overlooking the city of Vaduz. Without a lot of thought I decided to just start walking towards the castle on the hill. Eventually I found a beautiful little walking trail in the woods that wound its way up to the castle. I knew I was going the right way when informational posts began appearing about the history of Liechtenstein.

After a short 20 minute trek I made it to Vaduz Castle and my what a sight. I highly recommend spending some time enjoying the mountain and castle scenery. There are cute little benches and beautiful grassy areas perfect for a mountain picnic.

As much as I wanted to stay there forever, I knew I couldn’t so I headed back down the mountain to the next “must-see” location on my list, the Red House. The House was beautiful and I was able to snap some picks before I walked back down to the city center.

I enjoyed schnitzel & fries from a street vendor and spoke to some delightful locals before realizing the time. I caught the last bus back to the train station and headed back to Zurich for the evening. Liechtenstein may be one of the smallest countries but it makes up for its size with beautiful mountain views, delightful people, and delicious food!
